AP writer Matthew Lee reports on Secretary Rice's opinion about President-elect Obama:"You just know that Americans are not going to be satisfied until they really do form that perfect union," she said at the news conference. "And while the perfect union may never be in sight, we just keep working at it and trying."
A recent conversation with a friend helped me contemplate one of the great aspects of American - in spite of our failures, it is our ideals that make us a great country.
It's the same with the church - "that we all may be one" prayed Jesus (Gospel of John). I pray, as did Jesus, that we may all be one - and that sharing in that is the United States. Only by God's grace will we be able to draw nearer to that union, and so drawn, find our hearts expanded.
Thank, Secretary Rice, for reminding me that we are on a journey, participating in a process. The expansions and contractions are the rhythm of a living organism - one that is growing and learning, even if from its mistakes.
